Week 1 Term 1

We have had an incredibly busy start to our year in Hogwarts. All of our classes have been spending time getting to know each other and talking about how we can create the best classroom learning environments for everyone. We have also been investigating growth and fixed mindsets and learning about how we can change our thinking to help us become better learners and make our brains stronger.

Chicken Scramble
This week in maths we played a game called Chicken Scramble. We pretended to be chickens collecting 'corn'. We were investigating the most efficient and accurate strategy for counting large numbers. We discovered that counting by 2s and 5s and then forming groups of 10 was a great strategy.

Good Fit Books
During English, we have been learning about choosing 'Good Fit Books'. We compared choosing the correct weight to make our muscles stronger, to choosing the correct book to make our brains smarter. Ask your child to help explain the activity.

What good fit book are you currently reading?
How do you know that it is a good fit for you?

  1. I am currently reading Matilda by Roald Dahl. I know that it is a good fit book because there are some words that I look up in the dictionary. Also I love the plot line of Matilda and the way it is written. J.T.

  2. Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff are listening to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone. We think that it's a good fit book for us because we think the storyline is interesting for kids our age. We also like that J. K Rowling used some challenging words to help us expand our vocabulary.

    1. This is a great choice of book for you. Michael Morpurgo writes great stories about friendship and usually involve animals. You will have to have a chat with C.T. as she is reading the same novel. Born to Run was also released as Best Mate. Mrs Evans

  5. When I was in 1/2 my teacher said if you get 5 words wrong the book is not a good fit. Harry Potter is not a good book for me. The fairy books are good for me. From Danni-Ella.

    1. The 5 finger strategy is a great guide to check if a book is a good fit. I agree that the fairy books are good fit books. I'm glad you are enjoying them. Audio books, like we are listening to in class, help us read books that we perhaps couldn't do indpendently. Thanks Danni-Ella. Mrs Evans
