Book Week 2018

Last week we celebrated Book Week with all of our teachers dressing up in a Hogwarts themed costume. Lots of our students also came as their favourite book character and we all joined in some Book Week themed activities including a Kahoot Quiz all about children's books.

Science - Beneath Our Feet

We have finished our Science Inquiry- Beneath Our Feet. We have completed lots of new learning about the layers of the Earth, rocks, soil and erosion. Our final two experiments were about how water and being in a water way can break rocks down over periods of time and our how different samples of soil erode with water. We learnt that soil that has lots of vegetation and leaf matter is much less likely to erode than dry and dusty areas of soil.

What was something that you learnt about soil or rocks?

Emotion Poetry

In English, we have been exploring different types of poetry and how to use literary devices such as similes to 'bump' up our writing.

Happiness

Happiness is yellow like the sun shining
It tastes like bubblegum ice cream
It smells like the beach
It looks like everyone having fun playing with friends
It sounds like kids screaming with joy
It feels like being part of a family

By Levi

Calm

Calm is the colour blue like the ocean breeze
It tastes like cool minty ice cream
It smells like a spring flower
It looks like a peaceful beach
It sounds like birds tweeting
It feels like a warm blanket

By Yvonne

Joy

Joy is purple like a lily
It tastes like a plum
It smells like chocolate pudding
It looks like fireworks
It sounds like applause
It feels like being loved

By Anders

Happiness

Happiness is yellow like the  sun on a hot summer's day
It tastes like a warm ANZAC biscuit fresh from the oven
It smells like sweet fresh air
It looks like all of your family together with smiling faces
It sounds like friendly laughter
It feels like being safe

By Lily P

Anger

Anger is red like blood
It tastes like chillies
It smells like smoke and flames
It looks like buildings tumbling to the ground
It sounds like screams and yelling
It feels like no one understands

By Logan

Depression

Depression is grey like dark storm clouds
It tastes like a red hot chilli
It smells like burning tyres
It looks like a dark deserted alleyway
It sounds like the crying of a puppy
It feels like a cold bucket of water being tipped on my head

Science - Beneath Our Feet

As part of our Science Inquiry this term, we have been learning all about what is beneath our feet. We have been exploring the different layers that make up the Earth in our edible food experiment. We have also investigated soil and rock samples. We made part of our soil samples into solutions by mixing them with water and shaking them up. We then left them to for a few weeks so that they could settle again. Now that they have settled, we are able to see all of the different layers and the different parts that our soil is made up of. We drew labelled diagrams of our solutions. Take a look at the layers in some of our solutions!

What have you learnt about the soil beneath your feet?
