Uh-Oh!!!......Phew

During Readers' Workshops we have been exploring the structure of narratives. We used the Uh-Oh!!!...Phew strategy to help us comprehend the picture book, Bushfire by Margurite Hann Syme.

While we were reading we thought about the problem (uh-oh), how the problem got worse (UH-OH!) and how the problem got solved (phew!). We used a story mountain to help us. We are also trying to transfer this knowledge while writing a narrative during Writers' Workshops.

Use the story mountain to help you retell a story you have read.

  1. Anne of Green Gables

Uh Oh! Anne dyed her hair because the bottle said that it would turn her hair raven black.

UH OH! The dye turned Anne's hair green instead of black

Phew! Marrilla cut Anne's green hair short so that you could not see the green.

this is just one chapter of Anne of Green Gables. J.T.

  3. I love it when you smile by Sam McBratney

There was a mother kangaroo and a little joey kangaroo called Roo. Roo wasn't in a smiling mood that day. Mother kangaroo tried to get Roo in a happy mood. Roo didn't even want to play with his friends.
His Mum asked him if he was hungry and if he would go down the hill to get some food with her, but Roo said no. Mother kangaroo said "well I'm hungry so lets both go". So they went down the hill.
Roo was in mother kangaroo's pouch. Roo tried to warn his Mum that there was a big wide mud pit at the bottom of the hill. But mother kangaroo didn't listen, she was too busy jumping from side to side with her eyes closed.
Then mother kangaroo slipped and splashed into the mud! Mother kangaroo just laughed and Roo couldn't help just smiling.
So their uh-oh moment turned out to be good as it finally made Roo happy that day.
