Hogwarts Garden

At the end of last week some of the Hogwarts students helped Mrs. Evans, Miss. Markos and Mr. Larsen to plant out the large garden bed just outside our classrooms. We now have carrots, cucumber, celery, tomatoes, strawberries, snow peas, spring onions, capsicums and lots of different herbs growing. We are hoping that we will be able to harvest and taste some of the fresh food from our garden during next term.

What are your best gardening tips for us?

  1. Our gardening tips would be to apply mulch, such as lucerne hay or pea straw around the plants to protect them from frost & to help maintain soil temperature & retain moisture in the soil. A weekly application of a seaweed emulsion will help strengthen plants into the growing season, improving their resistance to stressors such as frost & disease. You could also make some effective & in-expensive cloches to cover the plants to protect them from frost, while they are young seedlings. Just cut out the bottom of recycled plastic bottles, such as large juice containers & place over each plant.
