Beyond The Bin

As part of our Geography Inquiry, Beyond the Bin, we have been lucky enough to go on an excursion to the Mugga Lane Resource Management Center, where we learnt all about how to correctly sort our waste and about how not sorting our waste correctly can really impact on our environment. We decided it would be a good idea to design some posters to promote the 3 R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We wanted to encourage people to think about how much waste they produce and how they could use some of their waste in other ways.

Take a look at some of our amazing posters below.

Questacon Science Circus

We recently were lucky enough to have a visit from Questacon Science Circus at school. Our presenters taught us all about the viscosity of fluids and how some fluids change viscosity when heated like with honey. We also got to help out with some experiments that helped explain about air pressure, suction  and kenetic energy. One of the presenters even used a cup to protect a small balloon when she hit it with a giant pan, to demonstrate how helmets help to protect us when we are using them in sports. We all had lots of fun helping with each of the different experiments while we learnt the interesting science behind them.

What was something you learnt or enjoyed from the Questacon Science Circus show?

Monday Rotations

Every Monday afternoon we seperate into smaller groups and have the opportunity to rotate through a different activity each week for four weeks. Our rotations include dance, bike workshop, art and coding. Lots of our Year 3/4 teachers have passions in different areas and this has allowed us the opportunity to share our passions with all of the students and to let them experience a wide range of activities.

In coding the Year 3 students are learning about algorithms and joining in with some unplugged activities and the Year 4 students are learning about the importance of binary numbers and how to create messages in binary code. In art students are creating Garbage Grot artworks to tie in to our Geography Inquiry - Beyond the Bin.

Take a look at some of the amazing work happinging in the bike worshop.

What has been something new that you have learnt or had an opportunity to try during our Monday rotations?

Fine Motor Activities

Anything children do with their hands relies on their fine motor muscles and skills. At school children spend up to 60% of their day performing tasks that involve the use of fine motor skills.

In Hogwarts we practice our fine motor skills every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Fine motor skills help to improve our writing, drawing, and manipulation skills.

Have a look at some of the fun activities that are helping us to improve our fine motor skills.

What fun activities have you tried at home, that use your fine motor skills?
