Readers' Workshop - Week 10

I Need My Monster

In the story different monsters appear under the bed.

Describe the monster that you would like to have under your bed.

E.g. My monster would have lots of fur to keep warm, strong arms to be able to move my bed and large bright eyes like a torch, so that she can light up the dark and we could make shadows.

Proofreading and Recrafting

During our writing sessions we have been focussing on our editing skills. We have developed a range of symbols to help us improve our writing. This week we have written Cinquain poems. We used our highlighters and pens to take a pit stop to proofread and recraft our writing. Check out some of our improvements:
Jellyfish
Jiggly, deadly
Pouncing, infecting, killing
Drifting through the glistening sea
Jellies

Tigers
Majestic, camouflaged
Hunting, prowling, chuffing
Viciously stalking its prey
Cat

Harry
Talented, Wizard
Flying, adventuring, duelling
Battling the evil Voldemort
Potter

Coconut
Rough, hazel
Hanging, falling, dropping
Slowly gushing tropical liquid
Milk

What are some of the types of proofreading and recrafting you can see above? e.g. highlighting capital letters

Readers' Workshop - Week 8

The title of the book uses alliteration.

Can you write an alliterative sentence that makes sense?

e.g. Quiet Kylie cleverly cuts capsicums into quarters.

Technology- Makey Makey

Today, some of our students were lucky enough to do some investigating and testing with our new Makey Makey. A Makey Makey is a circuit board which allows students to turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. We created a control pad, by drawing it on paper using a pencil and connecting it to the Makey Makey board to control an online piano! The possibilities are as endless as our imaginations!!

A Makey Makey board works by connecting alligator clips between objects and the Makey Makey board. Today it was the graphite from our pencil.

When you touch the graphite control pad, you make a connection, and Makey Makey sends the computer a keyboard message. The computer just thinks Makey Makey is a regular keyboard (or mouse). Therefore it works with all programs and webpages, because all programs and webpages take keyboard and mouse input.

Make + Key = Makey Makey!

What objects/items do you think we could try as conductors to control the
piano next? (We were thinking bananas!)

Inquiry - Beneath Our Feet

We have begun our new Science Inquiry called 'Beneath Our Feet'. During our Inquiry students will have opportunities to explore how natural processes and human activity shape their surroundings. Today, we investigated what we know and what we would like to learn about soils, rocks and landscapes and how they change over time.

What questions do you have about soil or rocks?

Reread and Sketch with More Detail

Last week during Readers' Workshop sessions we were learning about a new reading strategy called Reread and Sketch with More Detail. We used nonfiction texts and sketched a picture based on the information we remembered. Then we would reread the text and try to add more detail to our pictures using a different colour, based on the detail we read and remembered from the text. We repeated this until we thought we had all of the important information represented in our drawings. Take a look at some of our incredible thinking.

What interesting facts about volcanoes could you add to our boards?
