Grandfriends' Maths Morning

We are lucky enough to have lots of special visitors in the Realm of Rodda today. We have lots of fun activities and games to play, so that we can share some of the amazing learning we do during maths.

Choose one of the activities that you have shared today from the list above and explain what you taught your visitor about that maths activity.

Remember to include your first name only and have an adult check it first, so your post should look like this:

I made some symmetrical shapes using the Geoboards on the ipads with Mrs. Evans. I taught Mrs. Evans that for a shape to be symmetrical one side has to be a mirror image of the other.

Tie-Dye T-Shirts

We have been super busy getting ready for this years Awesome Art Show. With the help of Merriel and a YouTube video we have been trying our hands at Tie-Dyeing our shirts using a swirl pattern. We have had so much fun that we thought you might like to take a look at the video we watched and some photos of us in action, so you can try it at home too!

What fun art activities have you tried at home before?

What Makes a Great Explanation?

The Realm of Rodda have just finished learning about explanations. Explanations tell us why or how.  We began by examining and explaining 'The Water Cycle'. Next, we explained 'How Tadpoles Change Into Frogs'. We then investigated 'How Popcorn Kernels Pop', which was a very tasty explanation! Finally, we explained 'How We Sneeze'.

Can you explain the Water Cycle?

Summarising

We have been learning how to summarise in the Realm of Rodda. First we made an anchor chart about summarising and then we used myths, legends and fables to put what we have learnt into practice. Some of the texts that we have summarised include; The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Tiddalick, How The Cassowary Became A Flightless Bird and Kupe and th Giant Wheke (Octopus).

Share a summary of something that you have read today. See if you can shorten it into six or less events.

Do you want to build a snow man?

We are having such an exciting day in the Realm of Rodda today! We have had lots of fun enjoying all of the Year 5/6 market day stalls and it has just started to snow!

Can you research and explain what conditions are required for it to snow?

Year 4 Maths- Symmetry

Just when you thought we could not possibly fit any more learning into our brains, we learnt about symmetry as well!!!

We learnt that something is symmetrical when one half is a mirror image of the other half and that pictures and objects can sometimes be divided by more than one line of symmetry.

Take a look at some of our amazing symmetrical patterns.

What every day items can you find that have at least one line of symmetry?

Year 4 Maths - Probability

The learning just never stops in the Realm of Rodda! We have been hard at work in maths learning about probability. Probability is the chance that something will happen - how likely it is that some event will happen.

Sometimes you can measure a probability with a number like "10% chance of rain", or you can use words such as impossible, unlikely, possible, even chance, likely and certain.

Example: "It is unlikely to rain tomorrow".
Probability

One of our learning activities was to toss a coin as many times as we could in 2 minutes and to record in a tally, how many times we tossed heads or tails. We then discussed what sort of chance we had of getting either heads or tails each time we tossed the coin. Finally, we investigated the probability of different events occuring.

If i tossed a coin 50 times how many times will heads come up?

Based on probability I have a 1 in 2 chance on getting heads each time I toss the coin, so the probability is that I will toss 25 heads. Remember though that probability is just a guid.

Get tossing and let us know in the comments how many heads and tails you tossed!

Inquiry - Australia's Neighbours

During inquiry last week the Ream of Rodda were learning about Indonesia. We were lucky enough to have a special helper visiting in our room named Oki who is from Indonesia and he talked to everyone about what it is like to live there. He also answered lots of our questions about Indonesia. We watched a short video about Indonesia and then we wrote and produced our own news reports that gave lots of information about Indonesia.

Next, we produced some amazing Orangutan artworks while learning about tonal shading and the use of mixed media (for this artwork we used texta patterns and oil pastel shading and blending). We finished off the week as a whole school raising money on Green Day for The Orangutan Project! What a busy week!!

What interesting facts do you know about Indonesia?

Fresh Tastes at Fraser

Fraser Primary School has recently become a Fresh Tastes school.

Fresh Tastes is designed to make healthy food and drinks a part of everyday life at school, from the classroom through to the canteen, school events and at home. Through this three year program, we will be working with a number of community partners to provide a range of resources, activities and incentives to help bring about a culture of healthy food and drinks at Fraser.

Please have a look at the video below to learn more about Fresh Tastes.

Through Fresh Tastes this year, we hope to see a positive change in the foods being packed in students' lunchboxes. Healthy brain foods give us sustained energy which children need for a long day of learning at school.

Measure That!

In maths, year 3 students have been investigating measurement, looking at metric units of length, mass (weight) and capacity (liquid). Today we measured out our special green liquid into containers with the capacity of 1 litre, 500 millilitres and 250 millilitres. What other containers measuring less than 1 litre have you used recently ?
